The NYC Racial Justice Commission applauds bill sponsors, the “Our City, Our Vote” coalition, and advocates around the city on the passage of Int. No. 1867, which would give more than 800,000 immigrant New Yorkers the right to vote in local elections – and a voice in the government decisions that shape their lives. Hundreds of thousands of People of Color will soon have voting rights in this city, and with those rights, opportunity, access, and power in civic life. This is more than legislation, it is a message to world: New York City values justice, equity, and inclusion. Every action to empower New Yorkers fortifies our democracy and strengthens our communities.
