The New York City Charter provides the structure of City government and key powers of City elected officials and agencies. The Racial Justice Commission is empowered with the authority of a charter revision commission, which is a temporary commission that reviews the entire Charter and puts any proposals for its amendment before the voters. The Racial Justice Commission is also empowered to recommend other proposed policy and programmatic changes that are not included in its amendment proposals.
Mission Statement: The Racial Justice Commission, empowered with the legal authority of a Charter Revision Commission, will seize the transformative potential of this moment in history to identify and propose structural changes and significant policy reforms that will advance racial justice and equity and begin to dismantle structural racism for all New Yorkers. This work is necessary because systemic racism has been and continues to shape our reality. The Commission will seek to produce a rigorous, community-informed, and data-driven guide to shape the path forward towards a fair, equitable, and just New York City. While focusing on what can be uniquely addressed through the New York City Charter, the Commission may also include recommendations on state and federal level changes, and even those private companies should undertake, to address the roots of inequity.
This meeting is open to the public. The public will have the opportunity to observe the Commission’s discussions, but not testify before it. There will be opportunities for testimony and participation by members of the public at future public meetings and hearings of the Commission. Please view the Calendar tab on the Racial Justice Commission website for upcoming meetings or input sessions.
